ROUND 12 Friday 6th August 2010
Pacific Pines 10 v 0 Coomera @ COOL1
Goals: Kurtis Thompson 4, Francis Wood 3, James Zarafa 2, Jamie Taylor 1
Player of the Match: Hayden Smyth - pipped 4 goal Kurtis by keeping his concentration and a clean sheet!
From the Coach...
Our goal differential was given a huge boost against 8-man Coomera. It was very dissappointing that our opponents couldn't field 11 players but we were in no charitable mood as we totally punished them and ran in at half time 9 goals to the good.
Well done to James, Francis and Kurtis for grabbing 2, 3 and 4 goals respectively and Jamie weighing in with the other. There were some good moves and great finishes.Special mention goes to Ben who was making his first start for us since suffering a persisitant, niggling thigh injury several weeks ago, which almost threatened to end his season. Also, welcome back to Rupert, suspension served and raring to go, unlicky not to score much to Francis' benefit!
Now we have to prepare physically and mentally for our minor premier decider with Runaway Bay on Thursday. Come on you Pines!
ROUND 11 - ** BYE **
ROUND 10 Friday 23rd July 2010
Pacific Pines 1 v 1 Gold Coast Knights GCK 1 v 1 PAC @ GCKL1
Goal Scorer - James Zarafa
Player of the Match - Jamie Taylor - kept running to the end, desperate to force the winning goal
From the Coach.....
A great opportunity to break clear of Runaway Bay was missed with 2 points lost against 10-man Gold Coast Knights.
We were frustrated on a night of total possession that couldn't be turned into goals, the Knights' goalkeeper played his role with a string of first half saves.
After falling behind against the run of play, James quickly equalised triggering a huge spell of pressure which, on another night, would have opened the floodgates.
Credit to a battling Knights team, and unlucky to our lads whose annoyance was clearly evident on the final whistle.
ROUND 9 Friday 16th July 2010
Pacific Pines 4 v 2 Musgrave @ PACL1
Player of the Match: Francis Wood
Goal Scorers - James Zarafa, Francis Wood (pen), Jacob Dobbin, Kurtis Thompson
From the Coach....
Musgrave were showing good form coming into this game after beating Runaway Bay and we knew they posed a threat from our previous 5-4 thriller. After another 2 week wait for a game, losing top scorer Ryan Hardwick and our squad further depleted with suspension and injuries, it was essential to show character and determination.
The players responded superbly with a fine win. Altering our formation slightly we showed great promise with our attacking link up play, passing our way through the Musgarve defence to take an early lead through James. Frustratingly conceding 2 goals on 40 and 45 mins our turnaround was impressive. Francis showed great composure to re-take a penalty and level on 53 mins before we stormed into a 2 goal lead through a classy Jacob header (60mins) and a cheaky dink over the on-rushing keeper by Kurtis (65mins). Musgrave were rattled but still threatened with their pacy No. 10. We stood firm, stayed composed and ran out comfortable winners. Well done to those who battled through with injuries and to Nick and Jamal for stepping up from Div 3 and making a valuable contibution.
Round 8 25th June 2010
Pacific Pines 0 v 0 Merrimac @ MERL1
Player of the Match: Jamie Taylor
From the Coach...
A hard earned draw was probably a fair result looking at the chances ourselves and Merrimac squandered, although slightly more rewarding for us after going down to 10 men for the last ten minutes of the match.
Again our training and preparation for the game was disrupted due to the Brockman Oval availability being rained off. I do feel this shows in our attitude and mental preparation for matches when the Weds session is missed. A very average first half saw an almost unrecognisable Pines team fail time and again to pass the ball sharply and attempt to create space for each other with little to no talking compounding frustrations. But we still managed to miss the clearer cut chances gifted to us against the run of play!
We rallied second half and competed better, Chris making some good strong challenges against a physical Merrimac outfit (and then unfairly punished!) and Jamie, continuously, running hard even when covering at full back. After Rupert saw red for a second yellow the last few moments were tense, some last ditch covering by Danyon and poor finishing by Merrimac helped us over the line with a point.
We have to forget the flash points in the game and refereeing inconsistencies and look at our positioning, movement, alertness and willingness to run hard for each other, even if not in your ‘regular’ position. As a squad of players we all have to play our part to be successful this season.
Round 7 17th june 2010
Pacific Pines 5 v 1 Southport @ PACL1
Player of the Match: Ryan Hardwick
Goal Scorers: Jamie-1, Ryan-2, Kurtis-1, Own Goal-1
From the Coach.....
This was an important game for us to bounce straight back from our first defeat of the season at Runaway Bay. Starting the game at a good tempo was key to a comfortable win and we did just that scoring after 5 mins with a good move rounded off with Jamie’s lightning pace and assured finish. Our passing game throughout was much improved with Tre helping build moves from the back and our awareness of keeping possession was better. The strikers, especially Ryan, were looking for the ball early and bringing others into play which created a lot of space for us to exploit in behind the Southport defence.
3-0 up at half time and a good second half performance allowed us to use our subs well and feel the benefits of a solid squad performance. Southport did rally in the second half and battled to the end, frustratingly though the ‘ghosts of poor goals conceded’ came back to haunt us late on as we switched off and allowed a consolation.
We must strive to keep clean sheets in our next 6 games, which means defending as a team. Well played lads!
Round 6 4th June 2010
Pacific Pines 2 v 3 Runaway Bay @ RWB
Player of the Match: Maverick Jeske
Goal Scorers: Kurtis-1 & Ryan-1
From the Coach.....
Preparations for our toughest game of the season so far were hampered with the switch of venue due to the poor condition of the Brockman Way pitch. Although we were sporting to change to an away fixture at the eleventh hour, our pre-match warm up was rushed. This showed in the opening 10 minutes when Runaway Bay’s speedy attackers exploited our slow and disjointed start as they took the initiative and raced into a 2-0 lead, although a wicked deflection aided the first goal. Finally we settled into our game and started competing with a well organised Runaway Bay side, sure enough chances came and we finished the half on the front foot with a superb cross and a Kurtis volleyed finish. The second half continued with Pines pressing for a deserved equaliser. Eventually Ryan smashed in a sublime shot from a tight angle to make it 2-2 and silence the Runaway bench as a nervousness crept into their camp and a kick and rush game developed. A sucker punch goal won the game for Bay (which was well finished) as we were drawn into a scrappy final ten mins, if we had been disciplined from the start and kept playing our game to the end 3 points would have been achievable. Unlucky lads
Round 5 Friday 28th May 2010
Pacific Pines 3 v 1 Coomera @ PACL1
Player of the Match: Chris
Goal Scoreres: 1 each for Rupert, Cam & Ryan
From the Assistant Coach.....
As Stef was away, I was taking charge this week. With a big win from last week our boys were
feeling very confident against our rivals Coomera. From the off it showed, with Pines playing
most of the game in the opposition half. With all the pressure it seemed as if it was going to be
one of "those" games as there were many strikes on goal but to no avail. Coomera only managed
to play longs balls over the top so it was easy for our defence to clear...finally the pressure paid
off with a Ryan goal in the corner of the net just before half-time.
The second half started with two early goals, one from Rupert and an excellent goal from Cameron.
In the 70th minute, Coomera's first shot on target scored them their one & only goal and to their credit,
played well in the last 10 minutes.
Defence was our strong point and the match ended 3-1 with Chris earning man of the match and
some excellent defending from Danyon.
Looking forward tp playing 'top of the table', Runaway Bay next week. Keep up the good work!
Chris
Round 4 Friday 21st May 2010
**BYE**
Round 3 Friday 14th May 2010
Pacific Pines 10 v 1 Gold Coast Knights @ PACL1
Player of the Match: Jacob Dobbin
Goal Scorers: 1-James Zarafa, 3-Jacob Dobbin, 1-Francis Wood 1, 1-Jamie Taylor, 3-Ryan Hardwick & 1-Own Goal
From the Coach:
This game did wonders for our goal difference! We were far too strong for a Knights team, even according to their coach who admitted they should have been in division 3. Well done to everyone, obviously delighted to get a convincing win and pleased for the goal scorers, especially Jacob, who when asked to go on and score 3 goals did so before half time!
There were some good moves but we looked too direct at times which is understandable against a weaker team, when we did pass and work the ball quickly down wide positions it was impressive.
Games like this won’t get us prepared for tougher matches coming up but we should hopefully address this in training before our match against local rivals Coomera!
Round 2 Friday 7th May 2010
Pacific Pines 5 v 4 Musgrave @ MUSL1
Player of the Match:
Goal Scorers: Ryan Hardwick - 4 & Francis Wood - 1
From the Manager....
An amazing game, had us all biting our nails to the very end and very thankful when the
whistle finally blew!. Musgrave scored 3 goals before we even started! But the boys
fought back to win 5 - 4. A huge THANKYOU to Alan Hoy for taking the boys for the game.
Round 1 Friday 30th April 2010
Pacific Pines 2 v 1 Merrimac @ PACL1
PLAYER OF THE MATCH: CHRIS MCMONAGLE
GOAL SCORERS: JAMIE TAYLOR & KURTIS THOMPSON
FROM THE COACH.....
A great result to get our Division 2 season underway, it seemed that the players were more focused and willing to learn from mistakes made in our grading games.
This was always going to be a tight game and possibly a few nerves enabled Merrimac to take the early initiative with a disappointing soft goal and another effort coming off the post. We quickly raised our game and were denied by the impressive Merrimac keeper on three occasions.
Jamie Taylor eventually forced home the equaliser which was quickly followed by Kurtis Thompson’s well placed finish at the end of a sweeping move.
The second half would have been more comfortable were it not for the Merrimac goal post denying us a deserved third goal, but some good resolute defending and tenacity in midfield saw us finish strongly and claim the 3 points.
GRADING COMP GAME REPORTS BELOW.......
Round 4 Fri 23rd April 2010
Pacific Pines 3 v 4 Kingscliff PACL1
Goal Scorers:
1 Ryan Hardwick
1 Kurtis Thompson
1 James Zarafa
Player of the Day: Cameron Holden
From the Coach...
Perhaps the pre-match hype that this game was very winnable, and going in with improving form, gave the whole squad a far too relaxed approach to an organised and battling Kingscliff side.
After taking an early lead the Pines players never got grips with their opponents and lapsed back into a style of play that lacked support, passing, talking, work rate and sharpness to get to the ball! Kingscliff took a deserved 3-1 half time lead with defending that resembled ‘Moses’ parting of the Red Sea’.
In the 2nd half we rallied briefly and showed good battling qualities to claw back to 3-3 but always looked vulnerable to Kingscliff’s attacks. Our midfield and strikers were continually turning into their markers and trying to force the ball through single-handedly. There were rare glimpses of the threat we can be when we strung 2 or 3 passes together. Frustratingly a late penalty won it for Kingscliff after more indecisive and clumsy defending.
Let’s hope we all realise that striving to work hard and maintain high standards is the only way to progress now.
Round 3 Fri 16th April 2010
Coomera 1 v 1 Pacific Pines COOL1
Goal Scorer: Ryan Hardwick
Player of the Day: Danyon Barclay
From the Coach.....
This game started as a fairly even contest, Coomera and ourselves both squandering good opportunities in the opening 25 mins when a bit more composure in front of goal was required.
Playing our best football of the grading period thus far, we finished the half well on top. With the team looking to play the ball out from the back when possible and players being much more disciplined in their positions, there was good space for our attacking players to exploit.
Putting our missed chances behind us the 2nd half continued with our good attacking play, the strikers getting in behind the Coomera defence with good support from the midfield. The defence were attacking the ball well and covering each other. But then in a dramatic 5 minute spell the Coomera goalie saved Ryan’s driven penalty kick when we seemed destined to take the lead, a rare lapse allowed a Coomera striker to run through our back 4 before slotting home for 1-0. Full credit to the Pines players though, we equalised with a great cross and bullet header and had Coomera on the back foot again as the final whistle blew.
Round 2 Fri 9th April 2010
Pacific Pines 2 v 2 Merrimac PACL1
Goal Scorer/s:Francis Wood & Kurtis Thompson
Player of the Day:James Zarafa
From the Coach...
After a slow start and allowing Merrimac to settle too much on the ball, we started getting closer to our opponents, regularly disrupting their play and causing a few problems for them on the break.
The 2nd half saw us build on our finish to the first 40 mins, James dropped into central midfield with Francis and really took a stranglehold on the match. As practiced and discussed in training we started passing the ball quicker and found more and more space as the half drew on. With the defence looking more settled we took a deserved lead through Francis’ left foot shot after a good run. A lapse in concentration and composure allowed Merrimac to force the ball in behind our defence, with Hayden committed off his line a looping shot could only be smashed into the roof of the Pac Pines’ net by Tre’s despairing attempt to clear the ball.
Undeterred we bounced back with a great direct free-kick from Kurtis and looked good value for a win, but the referee had different ideas as he awarded a late penalty against Maverick despite him getting a toe to the ball.
Round 1 Fri 26th March 2010
Mudgeeraba 9 v 0 Pacific Pines MUDL2
Player of the Day: Hayden Smyth
From the Coach.....
Our disrupted training programme and no proper match practice, due to a bad run of weather, clearly showed against a strong and well organised Mudgeeraba side. Although starting the game reasonably positively our positional sense, support play and passing quickly diminished as Mudgeeraba settled in to their physical and fast paced style with plenty of unpressurised passes in behind our flat defence.
Confidence was low and it was a case of keeping the scoreline as respectful as possible. Double figures would have been inevitable were it not for goalkeeper Hayden.
Two late sending offs were a total distraction to the fact we were out thought, muscled and played.
This game will serve as a huge wake up call to us all. Surely things can only get better!
